A digital commonplace for a Regular Guy called Charlie Pharis

Category: Music (page 6 of 8)

Tomorrow is Labor Day…

And all you loyal readers (both of you!) know what that means…

It’s beginning to look sound a lot like Christmas;
Soon the bells will start,
And the thing that will make them ring is the carol that you sing
Right within your heart.

That’s right, boys and girls…Labor Day officially kicks off the start of Christmas music at the ol’ Just Charlie hacienda! And I’m chomping at the bit this year…

I may be rushing things, but deck the halls again now.
For we need a little Christmas
Right this very minute…

Non-iPod Players?

OK…suppose you wanted an mp3 player. And suppose you couldn’t afford an iPod right now. What would you do? Would you…

  • a. Keep saving up for the real thing?
  • b. Get something that’s not the real thing, but would work while you run, work out, etc.? (And if b. is your choice, what brand would you look for?)
  • c. Forget it…go back to your Walkman, and leave well enough alone?

Sunday Night Unwind, 08.19.07…

I’m in one of those jazz singer moods tonight, starting with “Lady Ella” herself. I heard this “new” CD in Starbucks last Friday. I’ve been a sucker for Ella for probably thirty years or so – ever since I discovered jazz singers in high school. When the CD finishes, I’ll be switching over to the Ella Fitzgerald channel on Pandora. (Cool deal, that Pandora…thanks, Gary or Ken or whoever it was that first alerted me to it!)

Loneliness Songs???

Hey, loyal readers (all two of you!)! Need a little more help…

We’re right in the middle of a series of messages called “Everybody Hurts,” talking about dealing with life’s pains, disappointments, etc. It’s just worked out that we’ve had some good success tying in some music to each message so far…

  • Everybody Hurts by R.E.M. (overall theme, natch!)
  • Better Days by The Goo Goo Dolls (when we talked about Job), and…
  • Home by Daughtry (last week, the Prodigal Son)

This week, we’re talking about loneliness…any good ideas?

I Don’t Think I’m Gonna Make It This Year…

31 days. A mere month, but I just don’t think I have the willpower this year for some reason.

See, Labor Day is the official beginning of Christmas Music for me. And I really have to force myself to wait that long, for I dearly love Christmas music! Beginning on Labor Day, that’s virtually all I listen to.

There are signs this year that I’m not going to be able to hold out till then. Pray for me. Pray for the lovely and gracious “Mrs. Just Charlie’s” sanity.

Just 31 days…I can do this…I know I can do this…

An Earworm of the Worst Kind…

Last night – or maybe it was at the crack of dawn this morning, I don’t remember just now – I heard the Suzanne Vega/DNA “classic” Tom’s Diner. And now I can’t get it out of my mind. Between that and Ace of Base’s Beautiful Life, it’s just been one of those “catchy tunes” kind of days…

Crap! Now, I’ve got it really bad! Add some ATC to the mix and your earworms are really getting ridiculous!

Sunday Night Unwind, 07.22.07…

My Unwind actually started before I got home after our evening service. I had a pretty personal and intense time of worship in our auditorium after everybody else left. Part pity party, part prayer time, part Bible study, part vision thing, just an interesting time alone with God and my thoughts. The Everything Glorious CD from the gang over at Passion provided the soundtrack, and I just put it back on when I got home.

Especially powerful right now is Kristian Stanfill’s rendition of Jesus Paid It All and Chris Tomlin’s I Stand Amazed (How Marvelous). Old songs with a great new twist…
